A Tale of Two Tragedies

US President Barack Obama, giving his last news conference of the year and his presidency, credits social media in part for the world's attention to the destruction of Aleppo, Syria, whereas, in his view, the South Sudan doesn't have as great a social media culture.

However, CNN Op-Ed writers Princeton Lyman and Nancy Lindborg argue in the article, "We're ignoring a possible genocide in South Sudan," that "Militias are mobilizing along ethnic lines, hate speech is circulating on social media, and perhaps most ominous of all, the South Sudan government's actions are already leveling villages, resulting in many dead in Central Equatoria state."

Social media may not be as prevalent in South Sudan (17.1% of people in South Sudan use the Internet) but it does exist.
