AUGNM Roundup for the Week of November 28, 2016

There is no shortage of good and bad Internet behavior out there, so we're continuing our weekly feature of the highlights and misses in the digital world over the previous seven days.

First, some terminology.

UGM Tip: Something particularly good we've noticed.

"404": A 404 is "Page Not Found," so it represents a goof on the Internet.

Skull and Crossbones: Danger!

UGM Tip: #GivingTuesday. It's more than a hashtag, it's a movement. GivingTuesday.com offers this mission statement: "#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. One of the best ways to get involved is in your own community. We've created a directory to help you find organizations, charities, events and more in your own community."

So for example, if you live in Arizona, you can search for organizations to donate your time and money to. Here are a few:

  1. TODOS: Mathematics For ALL

  2. Matthew's Crossing Food Bank

  3. Handi-Dogs Inc.

  4. Valley of the Sun YMCA

  5. Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center

  6. Tucson Wildlife Center

  7. "WALK a MILE in MY SHOES~~~on the Path to PEACE!!!"

  8. Make Way for Books

An honorable mention to XOVAIN/Kim, a makeup artist writing for InStyle.com, who enlightens us on the top ten makeup lies social media tells you. Number one: If you use XYZ cosmetics, you will look just like the Kardashians.

Follow XOVAIN/Kim's tips instead:

Especially before you go shopping during a week of Cyber Monday deals.

"404": Fidel Castro is dead, but at least he loved sports--so ESPN SportsCenter tweeted. Not the dumbest Fidel Castro social post we've seen since the Cuban leader's death on black Friday, but silly enough to warrant a "404". Upset Cubans didn't appreciate the sports tie-in. Hey, SportsCenter, didn't you have enough material with Ohio State beating University of Michigan by ten points in the fourth quarter over the weekend?

Skull: One of our AUGNM philosophies is that your presence on the internet doesn't just include emails or SMS or chat that you engage in, or Instagram pictures and YouTube.SnapChat/Vine/Vimeo videos you post. It doesn't just include tweets or Facebook status updates. Because everyone has a camera now, you can become the story. Witness this Black Friday brawl in Modesto, California.

Bonus Skull for whoever is screaming, "World star," in the video. People beating each other up over the exact same "100s of deals under $10" is not something anyone should encourage. #Think before you hit the mall on Black Friday. You just might become a YouTube star, and not the way you ever intended.
